Fernie's Up Charms All Ages

Fernie's Up is a piece for narrator and orchestra that tells the tale of Fernie, an unlikely hero of a sandlot baseball game.

Each time Fernie comes to bat, the other team taunts him, yelling "Fernie's up! Move in!"  In the 9th inning, with 2 men on, two outs, and his team trailing by 2 runs, Fernie comes to bat. The entire opposing team moves into the infield. When Fernie hits a simple line drive into the outfield, nobody is there to stop the ball, and his single becomes a homerun, winning the game.  The music animates the narration and leaves the audience cheering for young Fernie when he scores the winning run.
